Putussibau, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Four villages in Kalis Sub-district, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan Province, were submerged in waters reaching heights of up to 1.5 meters, according to Gunawan, head of the Kapuas Hulu Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

"Floods submerged four villages in Kalis Sub-district. Several residential areas and public facilities were submerged. The flooding also cut off access to roads connecting villages to the sub-district center, as the Kalis River overflowed its bank," Gunawan told ANTARA, here on Sunday.

The four flood-affected villages were Nanga Tubuk, Nanga Danau, Rantau Kalis, and Bahenap, he noted.

The floodwaters began to rise at around 7 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Standard Time), Sunday, and receded on Monday morning.

"The Kapuas Hulu BPBD team has reviewed the flood locations and coordinated with the sub-district for mitigation efforts. The floodwaters are gradually receding at present," Gunawan remarked.

However, the local villagers are urged to remain vigilant, as rains are forecast in the coming days.

"Until now, we have not been able to determine the impact of the flood," Gunawan stated.

"We urge the village chiefs and sub-district heads to be proactive in reporting about natural disasters, especially the current floods, so that we can immediately take steps," he stated.
