Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has urged all Indonesians to work together to battle the current spike in COVID-19 infections in the country.

For the greater good, everyone must adhere to the health protocols, she said during the House's plenary meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.

Maharani lauded all those who have contributed to the nation's COVID-19 eradication effort, especially people working on the frontlines, such as health workers and state apparatuses.

"DPR supports the Community Activities Restrictions Enforcement (PPKM) from July 3 to July 20, 2021 in Java and Bali islands. (And, the PPKM) it has been expanded to several regions since July 12, 2021 in order to suppress the spike in COVID-19," she added.

She also asked the government to take steps to control COVID-19 spread outside Java and Bali.

The DPR has continued to pay attention to and consider various problems faced by the public, especially with regard to COVID-19 handling, Maharani said.

"It has materialized through (several things such as) meetings with allies, work committee, which is formed by the board's monitoring team, and DPR's supervising team," she added.

Maharani further revealed that House committees have held meetings to keep track of issues such as the vaccination rate and the treatment of COVID-19 patients in hospitals or at the Athletes Village.

The PPKM has impacted the national economy and led to oxygen hoarding and hike in the prices of COVID-19 medications in several regions, she noted. It has also affected hospital and health workers' needs and preparations for the Tokyo Olympics, she added.
