Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Yogyakarta city government has requested 100 thousand additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to meet the need to expedite the vaccination rate.

"Last time, we had issued a request for 100 thousand vaccine doses, adjusted to the storage capacity of the (Health Office's) warehouse," Head of the Yogyakarta City Health Office Emma Rahmi Aryani stated in Yogyakarta on Tuesday.

Aryani noted that the Yogyakarta City Health Office’s pharmacy warehouse was capable of storing some 100 thousand doses, or around 10 thousand vials of COVID-19 vaccines.

Currently, the stock of Sinovac vaccine in Yogyakarta City is recorded at around 30 thousand doses. There are still vaccine stocks in healthcare facilities that routinely provide vaccination services to the public.

"At health facilities, the supply is estimated at around 10 thousand to 20 thousand vaccine doses," Aryani revealed.

Aryani noted that 18 health centers, 13 hospitals, and three clinics in Yogyakarta provided regular vaccination services.

Efforts to secure additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine were made by the Health Office and Yogyakarta City Mayor Haryadi Suyuti, she remarked.

"Hopefully, vaccines would be distributed from the buffer at the centre," Aryani stated.

She expressed that until now, some 35 percent of Yogyakarta City’s residents, who were targeted for vaccination, had been inoculated.

“Vaccination is also being conducted through schools. Every day, we target 1,200 junior high schoolers to get vaccinated. The total target for junior high schoolers is around 24,000 students," he remarked.

The Yogyakarta city government is currently conducting the Jogja Merdeka Vaccine Movement in the hopes of vaccinating all city residents prior to the Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, 2021.

“Accelerating this vaccination (rate) also requires adequate human resources. This is because human resources in the health sector still have other duties apart from vaccinating (people)," Aryani said.

From June until now, around 270 healthcare workers in Yogyakarta had contracted COVID-19, she added. Related news: Yogyakarta's elderly register for COVID-19 vaccination: task force
