Aceh Besar recorded heavy rains from afternoon till midnight on Tuesday, which caused flooding and landslides in several parts of the district, spokesperson for the Aceh Besar District's Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), Maswani, said on Wednesday.
The rains caused Krueng Kala and Krueng Pudeng rivers in Lhoong sub-district to overflow their banks, inundating several roads and homes, he informed.
The floodwaters reached a depth of 30-60 centimeters at Pudeng, Krueng Kala, and Geunteut Villages in Lhoong Sub-district, he said.
“In Lhoong Sub-district, 107 families, or 358 residents, of Gampong Pudeng have evacuated to higher ground, while residents of Gampong Geunteut and Krueng Kala have remained at home," he added.
Landslides triggered by rains also blocked a section of the Banda Aceh-Meulaboh highway near Paro and Kulu areas, officials informed. Several workers were still trying to clear the debris as of Wednesday afternoon, they added.
Landslides also affected two different sections of a road linking two villages in Pulau Aceh Sub-district.
Flood waters reaching a depth of 20-40 centimeters were also reported in Gampong Lambaro Neujid village in Peukan Bada sub-district. The floods prompted at least 54 people from 10 families to take refuge in other places, officials said.
