Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Metro Jaya Police has said it will conduct door-to-door vaccinations as part of the ongoing Merdeka Vaccination Program, which is targeting to vaccinate 100 percent of Jakarta's population against COVID-19.

"This is another innovation. We will conduct door-to-door vaccinations," Jakarta Metro Jaya Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Yusri Yunus informed here on Wednesday.

According to Jakarta Metro Police data, there are still around 311,122 Jakartans who have not received vaccinations, he informed. For this reason, a door-to-door campaign has been prepared to ensure all Jakartans are vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, he explained.

The door-to-door vaccination campaign will prioritize data from neighborhood associations (RTs) and community units (RWs), and vaccine volunteers will be sent to the homes of residents who cannot visit vaccination booths, Yunus informed.

According to Jakarta Metro Jaya Police, the Merdeka Vaccination Program has succeeded in boosting the number of vaccines administered in Jakarta to 96.5 percent of the population -- the highest vaccination rate in Indonesia.

The Merdeka Vaccination Program is one of the Jakarta Regional Leadership Coordination Forum’s (Forkopimda) strategies to expedite vaccinations to achieve 100-percent herd immunity in the capital city.

The vaccination program was launched by chief of National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, on August 1, 2021 and will continue till August 17, which will mark the 76th anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

The program is targeting to vaccinate 100 percent of Jakarta's population against COVID-19 by August 17, 2021.

To stem the transmission of COVID-19 and build herd immunity, the Indonesian government has rolled out a nationwide vaccination program since January 13, 2021. President Joko Widodo was the first vaccine recipient in the country.
