Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government should focus on ensuring that the industry sector survives the impact of COVID-19 instead of a quarterly economic growth, Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) observer Andry Satrion Nugroho stated.

On Monday, in conversation with ANTARA, Nugroho highlighted the importance of the export-oriented industry in Indonesia being able to fulfill requests of export destination countries.

The Indef observer believes that if Indonesia's industry were unable to meet their requirement, then those countries would look to meet their demand from another countries that will, in effect, replace Indonesia.

"Hence, how we keep them fulfilled becomes important," Nugroho elaborated.

In addition, the other factor that should be taken into account is how to prevent the industry sector from bringing negative impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he remarked.

He cited as an example the forced terminations at workplaces due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To this end, Nugroho lauded the government's efforts in the form of routine reporting of their performance to evaluate the condition of production and employees' health every Tuesday and Friday through the Ministry of Industry.

Nugroho is optimistic that the massive spread of COVID-19 would not recur, so that economic recovery could slowly occur day by day.

"Since our vaccination remains low, this should make us cautious, as we do not want massive infections and restrictions on economic activities again being imposed, especially in production," Nugroho noted.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was announced in March 2, 2020.

In a bid to stem the transmission of COVID-19, the Indonesian government implemented the public activity restriction (PPKM).
