Jakarta (ANTARA) - Lalu Mohammad Zohri, a national athlete from West Nusa Tenggara, struck gold in the men's 100-meter race at the Papua 20th National Sports Week (PON) at the Mimika Sports Complex, Mimika, Papua on Wednesday.

Zohri recorded a time of 10.46 seconds, defeating Sudirman Hadi, his teammate from the West Nusa Tenggara contingent, who recorded a time of 10.68 seconds and took the silver medal.

Meanwhile, the bronze medal was won by Eko Rimbawan of Central Kalimantan, who recorded a time of 10.692 seconds.

Starting from track three, Zohri sped off shortly after the starting gunshot. Sudirman, who was in second place, tried to catch up in the first 50 meters.

However, Zohri, a national record holder in men's 100 meters, proved unstoppable and was the first to reach the finish line.

Despite winning gold, Zohri failed to break his own national record of 10.03 seconds, which he achieved in 2019.

Zohri said he was satisfied with the record time he got considering that he had not participated in the championship for a long time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was grateful for bagging a gold for the West Nusa Tenggara contingent, he added.

The 21-year-old athlete said he hopes to win gold medals in the men's 200 meter and the men's 4x400 relay.

"Thank God, I am grateful to be able to give the best for West Nusa Tenggara, and hopefully I can win another gold medal for West Nusa Tenggara," he said.
