"We are optimistic that the extension would be a long-term solution while reducing the environmental impact," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan noted here on Monday.
The agreement to extend cooperation between the two regions was signed by Baswedan and Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi as well as Director General of Regional Administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Syafrizal, as the witness.
Before the extension agreement, the waste management cooperation between the Jakarta provincial government and the Bekasi city government would have ended on Tuesday, October 26.
Baswedan said he is optimistic that the cooperation will not just be a ceremonial signatory event but also become a culture that is integrated socially and economically.

"If the people are willing to work together, then the government must also be collaborative. Hopefully, this would further solidify the cooperation with Bekasi," he remarked.
He also lauded the Bekasi city government's support for its willingness to assist Jakarta in alleviating the waste problem.
Under the cooperation, the scope of synergies encompass compensation funds, revision on documents of environmental impact analysis, management, and monitoring plans.
Baswedan emphasized that it also covered the assessment of environmental capacity, the path and time of waste transportation, supervision and evaluation of waste utilization management, waste disposal and retrieval, innovation of waste reduction technology, and the waste processing at the TPST Bantargebang.
Meanwhile, the scope of compensation is environmental damage management, recovery, health costs, and treatment.
Other forms of compensation are cash assistance and death coverage for residents affected by the TPST Bantargebang.
