Jakarta (ANTARA) - People found violating health quarantine rules will now face one-year imprisonment and could also invite a fine of Rp100 million, according to police.

The sanction has been imposed according to Article 93 of Law Number 6/2018 on Health Quarantine, head of the Public Information Bureau of the Indonesian National Police, Brigadier General Rusdi Hartono, informed on Thursday.

He made the statement at a virtual discussion entitled ‘Health Quarantine is Required for Everyone to Free Indonesia from the Pandemic’, which was streamed on the YouTube channel of FMB9ID_IKP.

In addition, according to Article 14 of Law Number 4/1984 concerning Infectious Disease Outbreaks, people who intentionally hinder the handling of an outbreak will face one-year imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of Rp1 million, he said.

Meanwhile, those who accidentally hinder the handling of an outbreak will be sentenced to six months' imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of Rp500 thousand, Hartono said.

"Now, we are ensuring that the regulations run well," he added.

Furthermore, quoting National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, he said that it is important to ensure the comfort of people undergoing quarantine.

The sanctions are aimed at preventing any unwanted actions, for instance, escaping from the quarantine site before the isolation period ends, he informed.

"Especially, the people who just arrive from abroad," Hartono said.
