Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The torch of the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) was carried from Genyem village, Grime Valley, Nimboran sub-district, Jayapura district to Jayapura Mayor's Office, Papua province, where it will remain on Wednesday night.

According to a press release from the Communication and Informatics Ministry’s media center, the second day of XVI Papua Peparnas began with a series of ceremonies at the head of Jayapura district's office in Doyo Baru village, Sentani sub-district on Wednesday morning.

The torch relay entourage was dispatched by the district head, Mathius Awoitauw, along with several district officers and members from the local community.

The entourage carried the torch 500 meters from the office and then continued the journey by bus. The buses transporting them were warmly welcomed along the road.

The chosen route passed along Lake Sentani and the Lukas Enembe Sports Complex in Harapan village, East Sentani sub-district, Jayapura district.

The journey from the sports complex to the Jayapura Mayor's office took about an hour. The mayor, Benhur Tomi Mano, welcomed the group himself.

The torch will be kept overnight at the office before being relayed to the Papua Governor's office on Thursday.

The torch will be used to ignite the cauldron at the Mandala Stadium, Jayapura city, at the opening ceremony of the XVI Papua Peparnas, which will be attended by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin on Friday.

Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo is scheduled to close the national event on November 13, 2021 at the same venue.

A total of 3,609 athletes from provinces across Indonesia, except West Sulawesi, will compete in 12 sports at 12 venues in Jayapura city and Jayapura district.

The 12 sports are powerlifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, judo, shooting, archery, swimming, cerebral palsy soccer, wheelchair tennis, and table tennis.

There will be 2,812 medals contested, comprising 861 gold medals, 861 silver medals, and 1,090 bronze medals, in 640 events
