The pandemic has affected the situation of the work force in Indonesia
Jakarta (ANTARA) - At least 21.32 million individuals from the working-age group were still bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2021, Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Margo Yuwono stated.

The figure has declined 26.77 percent, or some 7.80 million, as compared to August 2020 when the number had reached 29.12 million people.

"The pandemic has affected the situation of the work force in Indonesia," Yuwono noted here on Friday.

In comparison with February 2021, the number of people from the working-age group affected by the pandemic had increased by 2.22 million or some 11.67 percent.

The BPS head noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had caused numerous job losses, while several others had become a non-labor force, and people of the working age group were out of the labor force and had conducted other activities.

The pandemic has also led to a reduction in the number of working hours for some workers.

Yuwono noted that among people of the working-age group affected by the pandemic, 1.82 million had lost their jobs due to COVID-19, 700 thousand people became non-labor force, 1.39 million people had temporarily stopped working, and 17.41 million people had their working hours cut short.

Meanwhile, the size of the workforce in August 2021 had reached 140.15 million, or up 1.93 million people, as compared to August 2020, with the level of participation of the workforce (TPAK) increasing by 0.03 percent points.

The working population has reached 131.05 million during the period, or increased 2.60 million, as compared to August 2020.

The manufacturing industry has showed the highest increase in job vacancies at 0.65 percent. Other sectors, including agriculture, forestry, and fishery, had recorded a decline of 1.43 percent.
