As mandated by Law Number 18 of 2017, Indonesian migrant workers are not allowed to go to work abroad if they do not have competence
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah has emphasized that Indonesian migrant workers must build their competence before leaving the country to work abroad.

"As mandated by Law Number 18 of 2017, Indonesian migrant workers are not allowed to go to work abroad if they do not have competence," the minister said in a written statement received here on Saturday.

The protection of workers is the primary focus in the placement of Indonesian migrant workers. The upstream of this protection is competency that must be possessed by all workers before pursuing employment in other countries, she said.

Law Number 18 of 2017, she said, could be the first step to fixing the governance of migrant workers’ placement.

The regulation states that the central government, through its ministries or institutions, local governments up to the village level, the private sector, and the community have their respective roles, she noted.

For this reason, all parties must continue to work together to implement the law to improve the competence of people seeking jobs in other countries, she stressed.

To help prospective migrant workers and secure their future, the Ministry of Manpower will continue to strive to push them to improve their competency, Fauziyah said.

“We will continue to strive so that next year in 2022, there will be training quotas for prospective migrant workers through the Pre-employment Card Program," she added.
