Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Nina Gusmita from North Sumatra broke the national record for the women's 100 meter T54 or wheelchair racing competition with a record time of 18.52 seconds at the XVI National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) in Papua .



At the competition, which took place at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura, Papua, she broke the previous record of 21.92 seconds made by Dina Rulina during the XV West Java Peparnas in 2016.



Meanwhile, Papua's Novia Mawarni Ayu clinched the silver medal with a time of 20.59 seconds in Tuesday's race.



Central Java's Putri Ayu Julianingsing took the bronze with a time of 21.28 seconds.

Gusmita affirmed that she is grateful for the achievement even though she had recorded a better time during training.



"My record during training was better than this. Maybe it is because of the weather. It is really hot here," the athlete remarked.



She admitted that she did not set a high target for her debut in this year's XVI Papua Peparnas.

"It is nice to win gold and also break the record. Since it is my first time (at Peparnas), I did not know my opponents," she said.



Gusmita participated in three wheelchair races: 100m, 200m, and 400m, and secured gold in the 100m and 200m races.



The XVI Papua Peparnas is being conducted in two clusters: Jayapura city and Jayapura. At least 1,985 athletes from all provinces except West Sulawesi are participating in the event featuring 12 sports: powerlifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, judo, shooting, archery, swimming, cerebral palsy football, wheelchair court tennis, and table tennis.



Vice President Ma'ruf Amin officially opened the XVI National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) at the Mandala Stadium in Jayapura city on November 5, 2021.
