Undeniable scientific and qualitative evidence has stated that the earth is becoming warmer, the weather is becoming more extreme, the surface of the ocean is rising, and there are floods on an extreme scale.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Climate change is a global threat that affects the entire nation, House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Speaker Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar noted as mentioned in a written statement here, Tuesday.

"Undeniable scientific and qualitative evidence has stated that the earth is becoming warmer, the weather is becoming more extreme, the surface of the ocean is rising, and there are floods on an extreme scale," he stated.

Climate change is a catastrophic disaster for the continuation and prosperity of all citizens in the world, he remarked during a talk show with entrepreneurs at Indonesia's Pavilion during the COP26 UNFCCC in Glasgow on Monday.

Iskandar asserted that Indonesia held a special position and could play a crucial role in cooling the earth.

He said that Indonesia is the world's lungs, as natural forests and mangroves can and have absorbed carbon on a giant scale.

However, he admitted that as an archipelagic nation, Indonesia is extremely vulnerable to climate change, rising ocean levels, extreme rainfall, and harvest failure.

To this end, urgent climate change solutions are deemed necessary for the sake of Indonesia and the world, he expounded.

"We need to apply a whole government and society approach to achieve the national peak emission target and FOLU (Forestry and Other Land Use) carbon net sink by 2030 and Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier," he affirmed.

Iskandar highlighted two solutions in order to handle climate change. The first is policy change and the second is behavior change.

He opined that policy change would not be sufficient without a change in the people's behavior.

Changes come from supply and demand, he noted. With this, more of the nation's energy source would come from the sun, the wind, and other forms of renewable energy by 2030.

"In 2030, we will be able to stop and reduce deforestation. With this method, by 2060 or earlier, we could achieve the Net Zero target," he stated.
