"The MPR speaker expressed condolences over the flood disaster affecting the residents in several areas and urged the local government to immediately handle and provide assistance to its people," he noted in a written statement received here, Tuesday.
Regional governments and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies (BPBD) must remain alert to promptly record the number of residents affected by floods as well as keep track of the extent of losses incurred on account of the natural disaster.
"Those steps should be taken, so that the government can immediately take disaster management steps that will later be adapted to the condition in each region," he explained.
Soesatyo also urged the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Offices to promptly distribute aid to residents affected by floods.
However, they must also ensure that the assistance offered is tailored to the needs of each region and distributed to the right target beneficiaries.
Areas prone to natural disasters should immediately alert the BPBD and optimize emergency aid funds for disaster response. This is deemed necessary as the primary step in disaster management.
"At the same time, related parties must continue to follow weather information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)," he remarked.
Earlier, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) had urged the BPBD in 34 provinces to take preventive measures against likely hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, flash floods, landslides, and strong winds.
The need for the local government and community to be prepared refers to information from the BMKG regarding the likelihood of La Nina occurring in Indonesia from October 2021 to February 2022.
