Due to the two companies' noncompliance to the wastewater management regulation, we impose administrative sanctions that necessitate PT MEF and PT B to close the IPAL (wastewater treatment plant) outlet channels
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Environment Office monitors the implementation of administrative sanctions on two companies -- PT MEF and PT B -- suspected of dumping waste containing paracetamol into the Jakarta Bay.

"Due to the two companies' noncompliance to the wastewater management regulation, we impose administrative sanctions that necessitate PT MEF and PT B to close the IPAL (wastewater treatment plant) outlet channels," Head of the DKI Jakarta Environment Office Asep Kuswanto stated here on Thursday.

Apart from being obligated to close the sewerage of the wastewater treatment plant, the two companies are also required to make improvements to the IPAL performance and obtain the technical approval of wastewater disposal to control water pollution.

According to Kuswanto, it was reported that if the IPALs of PT MEF and PT B were not stopped, his team will terminate both their IPAL channels.

The imposition of administrative sanctions is stipulated in the Head of the Environment Office Decree No. 671 and 672 of 2021 on the Enforcement of Government Coercive Administrative Sanctions on PT MEF and PT B for flouting wastewater management.

The administrative sanctions are based on Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management and Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 on the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management, he pointed out.

Earlier, the Environment Office had investigated some business activities suspected of dumping waste containing paracetamol in the North Jakarta area.

The test was conducted by sampling wastewater and conducting laboratory examination for evaluating the fulfillment of quality standards in accordance with Jakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No. 69 of 2013 on Wastewater Quality Standards for Business Activities.

The Jakarta Environment Office finally agreed that on the basis of the verification results, it was revealed that PT MEF and PT B had failed to comply with the wastewater management regulation.

The two companies that run pharmaceutical business activities in North Jakarta were found to not follow the wastewater quality standards as proven by the laboratory results of the pharmaceutical industry waste in the bay.
