Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono lauded the Health Office in the city for its contribution to suppressing and controlling the COVID-19 pandemic in the region.

"How the ranks of the Pontianak City Health Office, as health fighters, have succeeded in controlling COVID-19 and provided optimal services to the community," the mayor remarked during the celebration of National Health Day at the Pontianak City Health Office in Pontianak on Friday.

Kamtono pointed out that some health workers were exposed to the virus and even died in the process of handling COVID-19 cases.

"Thus I, on behalf of the Pontianak city government, laud the (hard work) of the health workers in providing health services to the community, especially in Pontianak City," he added.

The Pontianak City Health Office and its stakeholder had achieved a 70.7-percent vaccination rate in the city. The effort was lauded by the city government.

He expects that 80 percent of the COVID-19 vaccination target can be achieved by the end of 2021. The mayor also reminded everyone to stay vigilant and apply health protocols in their daily lives despite the massive promotion and acceleration of COVID-19 vaccination.

He added that COVID-19 cases in the city had been declining steadily and under control since the last two months.

"This can be proven by the conditions in Rusunawa (a place for COVID-19 patients to isolate themselves), where there have been no patients for the last two months, and the hospital('s condition) is the same. Although there are still one or two, they can be handled," he pointed out.

However, the Home Affairs Ministry has still assigned a yellow tag or level 2 community activity restrictions in Pontianak City based on the instructions regarding COVID-19 pandemic handling and its supervision.

The Pontianak city government commemorated National Health Day at the Pontianak City Health Office on Friday.

"On the occasion of National Health Day, we hold several activities in order to encourage health workers of Pontianak City after we have faced the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years," he remarked.
