We are committed to zero tolerance against illegal fishing
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries detained up to 166 illegal fishing vessels in 2021 to balance economic activities by maintaining the ecological condition of the national waters.

"In 2021, the PSDKP (Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision) detained a total 166 domestic and foreign fishing vessels," the ministry's Director General of PDSKP, Adin Nurawaluddin, said here on Monday.

The 166 vessels comprised 114 Indonesian fishing vessels that violated the rules and 52 foreign fishing ships, including 25 Vietnamese-flagged vessels.

During the same period, the ministry inspected a total of 2,672 vessels comprising 2,606 Indonesian fishing vessels and 66 foreign fishing vessels.

Based on the result of the inspection, the ministry handled 212 legal cases, of which 157 cases proceeded to criminal proceedings, while court verdicts were issued in 144 cases.

"We are committed to zero tolerance against illegal fishing," he remarked.

The ministry received the Gatra Award for its performance in eradicating illegal fishing during the pandemic.

"Thank you for the award given by the Gatra Media Group in the form of the Gatra Award. Of course, this is an extraordinary form of appreciation for the performance of our officers in the field," Nurawaluddin noted in a statement on Saturday (Dec 4).

The award is a form of appreciation for the ministry's continued efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic to secure the country's sovereignty in marine and fishery resource management in areas prone to illegal fishing.
