Jakarta (ANTARA) - At least 89 or 17.9 percent of the 498 Omicron cases detected in Jakarta have involved local transmission, Deputy Governor of Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria has informed.

"The imported cases are 409 cases or 80.1 percent," Patria noted at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday.

He said that the 409 imported cases were detected in people who had traveled overseas and only recently returned to the country.

People exposed to the Omicron virus are currently being isolated at the Sulianti Saroso Hospital and the Kemayoran Athlete Village Emergency Hospital, the deputy governor said.

"There might be some additions, we will review the data again," he added.

He reminded the people to adhere to the health protocols and cut travel in view of the increase in Omicron cases.

He also urged people who are not yet inoculated to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

"We ask everyone to stay at home. Especially, the children and the elderly," he said.

The best place to be is home, unless there is urgent need, he added. "(Such as) if we are forced to go to work, (or) school. Even then, we urge for the whole family to adhere to the health protocols."

According to head of the Jakarta Health Office Widyastuti the Omicron variant spreads quickly but causes mild symptoms, which are less severe than the Delta variant.

Even so, the public is asked to remain cautious because of the rapid transmission, she added.

"Omicron is a variant that is relatively new and with a fairly fast transmission rate, but (for it) to show severe (symptoms) only seems (possible) theoretically, and (from the observation and) experience (so far), it is unlike the Delta one," she informed.
