Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Health Ministry said it is tracing the contacts of a Bogor-Jakarta traveler who was infected with the Omicron variant through local transmission as part of mitigation efforts to reduce the risk of further infections.

"This case can be traced as long as the person in question can remember who did they meet while traveling from Bogor to Jakarta," the ministry's spokesperson, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said on Wednesday.

The patient's travel history is being traced in coordination with the COVID-19 Handling Task Force and the Health Service of Bogor and Jakarta, she informed.

Currently, the patient in question is undergoing isolation at a government-owned health service facility in Jakarta, she noted.

Tarmizi urged officials to continue intensifying tracing efforts in the case. She also advised citizens to immediately get themselves checked at the nearest health facility if they notice any symptoms.

"Early detection could be done when our body does not feel healthy. Also, immediately vaccinate and use the PeduliLindungi application," she said.

The asymptomatic Omicron patient whose contacts are being traced by the ministry traveled from his residence in Dramaga, Bogor, West Java, to Jakarta using public transportation.

Bogor Health Office Head Mike Kaltarina said he suspected that the patient contracted Omicron through local transmission around January 6, 2022.

During the tracing of the patient's travel history, ten people who had close contact with the patient were confirmed negative for COVID-19, he informed.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that the number of Omicron cases has continued to rise. As of Tuesday, the total number of cases has reached 802, with most of them detected in international travelers.

According to Tarmizi, a majority of the people who have contracted Omicron have shown mild to no symptoms so they have not needed hospitalization.
