We do not want digital feudalism. To prevent digital digital feudalism, publisher rights are necessary.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian press requires a regulation on publisher rights to address the phenomenon of digital feudalism wherein the digital world is dominated by global platforms, according to the Press Council Head Mohammad Nuh.

"We do not want digital feudalism. To prevent digital feudalism, publisher rights are necessary," Nuh stated during the eve of the 2022 National Press Day commemoration in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, on Wednesday.

Publisher rights will help the Indonesian press world to handle digital disruption that could potentially threaten digital sovereignty and the national interests, the council head noted.

In addition, Nuh remarked that the council had completed the draft of the publisher rights regulation and had submitted it to the government for further processing.

To this end, Nuh expressed gratitude for President Joko Widodo's support to the efforts to realize this regulation.

"The support from the president is very noble in order to promptly give our press workers an umbrella that could shield them from digital disruption," he remarked.

Meanwhile, he confirmed that the Press Council will ink a memorandum of understanding with several elements of the government, such as the Police Chief, Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander, and National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

The signing of this memorandum of understanding is part of the efforts of the press to function as an internal component of the nation along with the executive, legislative, and judicial institutions.

According to Nuh, as Indonesia has a system of democracy, the press could be considered as the biological sibling of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches in terms of managing the nation.

"Hence, all of us are part of one big family known as Indonesia," he affirmed.
