Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and PT ThorCon Power Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on research, development, and innovation of molten salt reactors as an advanced technology for producing nuclear energy.

"Through this research and development, a common mindset is expected to be formed for all parties regarding the urgency of developing commercial nuclear power plants in Indonesia as an important component in achieving net-zero emissions by 2060," Head of BRIN Laksana Tri Handoko noted in a statement here on Friday.

Research and development activities are expected to produce a prototype as future technology candidates for nuclear power plants that can offer an alternative for carbon emission reduction programs.

Handoko affirmed that the cooperation was aimed at conducting research, development, and innovation in the nuclear field, especially the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor technology, with a modular system and by using thorium fuel.

Both parties will collaborate in research and science and technology, utilization of facilities and infrastructure, exchange of data and information, and human resource development.

The MoU was inked by Acting Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization of BRIN Mego Pinandito and Chief Operating Officer of PT ThorCon Power Indonesia Bob S. Effendi.
