Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of state-run electricity company PT PLN, has processed coal fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) waste from its Adipala steam power plant (PLTU) unit into construction material, including concrete brick.

President Director of PT Indonesia Power Ahsin Sidqi, in a statement here on Friday, echoed the company's commitment to using FABA as construction material under the efforts to manage coal waste through the reduce, reuse, and recycle concept.

FABA is the ash produced from the burning of coal at coal-fired power plants.

"This is part of Indonesia Power's commitment to use FABA massively and to encourage other companies to produce FABA derivative products to reduce, reuse, and recycle (the coal waste)," Sidqi noted.

The company's Central Java-2 Adipala PLU unit has used FABA derivative products in road casting, soil stabilization in a land owned by the Indonesian Military, construction of shelter houses in Cilacap, road renovation in several villages in Adipala Sub-district, and construction of the Semarang-Demak toll road.

Domestic cement producer, PT Sinar Tambang Arthaestari (Semen BIMA), has also targeted to use FABA in its production.

PLTU Adipala has annually produced 85 thousand tons of FABA. It has targeted FABA utilization to reach 55 thousand tons in 2021, though the realization has surpassed the target to reach 135 thousand tons.

According to a study of PLTU Adipala, FABA waste could be processed into paving block, concrete brick, readymix, kansteen, wall panel, and refractory cast.

Moreover, FABA can be used as material in mine reclamation, calcium substitution to neutralize acid water in mining areas, and improve the land condition for revegetation of ex-mining areas.
