The worst areas that suffered damage are Nagari Kajai in Talamau and Nagari Kinali
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported until 10:06 a.m. local time at least 15 aftershocks following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake, 17 km northeast of the West Pasaman region, West Sumatra.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the West Pasaman region, West Sumatra, at 8:39 a.m. local time on Friday.

BMKG Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, noted that the largest magnitude of the aftershocks was recorded at 4.2.

Prayitno also explained that the 6.1-magnitude quake that struck northeast of West Pasaman began with a foreshock of magnitude 5.2.

The earthquake originated 10 km underground in an area about 17 km northeast of the West Pasaman region. The earthquake was also felt in the regions of West Pasaman, Pasaman, Agam, Bukitttinggi, Padang Panjang, Padang, Payakumbuh, Aek Godang, Gunung Sitoli, Pesisir Selatan on the southern coast line, Rantau Parapat, Nias Selatan, and Bangkinang, according to BMKG.

"Until now, reports were received of damage in the West Pasaman area caused by the earthquake. The modeling result showed that the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami," Prayitno explained.

The BMKG head also urged residents near the epicenter to avoid cracked or damaged buildings and to inspect houses to ensure there is no damage that could endanger the building's stability before entering.

West Pasaman District Head Hamsuardi noted that hundreds of houses had collapsed due to the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that shook the area.

"The worst areas that suffered damage are Nagari Kajai in Talamau and Nagari Kinali," he noted when contacted from Simpang Empat on Friday.

Hamsuardi stated that the deputy district head, district secretary, and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) personnel had currently headed to the worst-impacted locations to conduct evacuation and handling and take the requisite steps.
