Jakarta (ANTARA) - All parties must take part in preventing teen gang fights, commonly known as “tawuran,” which have increased in the last two days, Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria has said.

"We, the community, parents, security officers, including the young generation, students, must take part in preventing various crimes and anarchy, including gang fights," he urged here on Monday.

According to the deputy governor, parents have an obligation to monitor their children. They should prevent their children from committing harmful activities, especially those that could harm other people, he said.

"Parents should ensure to take care of, educate, and monitor our children every day,” Patria added.

Society can also play a huge role in preventing teen gang fights, he said. For that reason, local village officials need to monitor residents, he added.

"Especially amid the pandemic, there should be no gang fight or other (expressions of) anarchy. Therefore, we encourage security officers to monitor, secure, and take action, as well as impose sanctions that have a deterrent effect," Patria said.

Most importantly, awareness must be raised among students about maintaining friendship in the community, he added.

"Thus, it is unnecessary to do vicious acts, especially gang fights that can put other people in danger," he said.

Gang fights between teenagers have been reported in Senen, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta for two days in a row. The fights have involved local residents in the Senen area, officials said.

Police have arrested nine people and seized three weapons that were reportedly used in the fights.

They have also arrested 33 people suspected of planning to start a gang fight, and named 7 as suspects.

Meanwhile, in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, three youths have reportedly suffered stab wounds, officials said.

In the past week, as many as 23 teenagers have been arrested by police in South Jakarta for allegedly planning a gang fight.
