As the largest island country, Indonesia must have a resilient naval might. Hence, consolidation of naval power through defense equipment modernization will be one of the priority programs of the Navy
Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy Admiral Yudo Margono has said that the modernization of defense equipment is one of the priorities of the Navy.

"As the largest island country, Indonesia must have a resilient naval might. Hence, consolidation of naval power through defense equipment modernization will be one of the priority programs of the Navy," he said while inaugurating the new commander of warship KRI Teluk Palu-523 here on Wednesday.

The navy will also support the advancement of the domestic defense industry and self-sufficiency, which is one of the government's goals to bolster national security and defense amidst global political dynamics, he added.

The chief of staff highlighted that the development of defense equipment technology will not be an easy task, as defense technology is within the scope of military technology development that will spearhead technological advances in the world.

"It is not difficult to comprehend this issue because military technology development will be orientated to achieve superiority and advantage from opponents; hence all countries will exert their effort in creating new technologies that no other country has ever or yet to make," he remarked.

According to Margono, as defense technology has high complexity and the industry is expected to develop a self-sufficient national defense industry capable of fulfilling technology demand, commitment from relevant stakeholders is necessary.

Industry actors must enhance their capability through improvement in production quality and modern technologies to ensure they can meet the demand from the national military and compete in the global market, he said.

"For the Indonesian Navy responsible to the naval defense and security, the tank carrier ship will be one of the most needed defense equipment as the ship has various functions in naval and warfare operations, as well as other functions," the navy chief of staff noted.

He also pointed out that KRI Teluk Palu 523 and other ships of the same type will be highly beneficial for the Navy, which would conduct humanitarian and disaster response operations in the future.

"Indonesia's geographic conditions, with the thousands of islands, means that transport ships will be essential. I believe that the presence of KRI Teluk Palu 523 among the Indonesian Navy defense system armada will enhance our power, confidence, and performance in future operations," Margono remarked.
