Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim has said that the COVID-19 pandemic has offered a chance to re-evaluate the education system.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has become a moment of reflection for all parties about challenges in the educational system currently faced by the global community," Makarim said while opening the G20 Education Working Group (EdWG) forum, here on Wednesday.

The minister urged participants of the forum, which is being hosted in Yogyakarta from March 16–18, 2022, to take concrete action to re-evaluate the current way of life and improve all aspects of life.

"So far, we are yet to exert our maximum effort. Our way of life was not sustainable, not resilient, and not just enough to face challenges in the future. From personal health to public health, our relations with nature, and our way to teach children, we need to do more concrete actions," Makarim remarked.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global education system and affected hundreds of thousands of children worldwide; hence, joint action is necessary to address basic issues in the education system and enhance the system to make it more relevant to the challenges of the 21st century, the minister noted.

Indonesia, as the current holder of the G20 Presidency, is committed to enhancing collaboration and creating a more sustainable, resilient, and fair post-pandemic future, he affirmed.

The theme of Indonesia's G20 Presidency, 'Recover Together, Recover Stronger,’ fits properly with Indonesia's national characteristics that uphold mutual assistance value to achieve common goals, Makarim added.

The priority agenda for the first day of the G20 EdWG forum will be quality education for all and digital technology in the education sector.

The forum, which 27 delegates are joining at the offline venue and 64 delegates are attending by online means, is presided by the ministry's director general of teachers and educational staff, Iwan Syahril, as chair of G20 Education Working Group.
