Jakarta (ANTARA) - At least 42 homes were damaged after a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Seram Bagian Barat District, Maluku Province, on Thursday (March 24, 2022), according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

All the earthquake-affected houses were located in Kamarian Village, Kairatu Sub-district, acting chief of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said citing a report from the Seram Bagian Barat District Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

"As per the report, when the earthquake struck, local residents felt strong shaking for one to two seconds. BPBD reported that it had appealed to residents to remain vigilant outside their houses and stay alert for aftershocks," he informed in a BNPB press statement, accessed from Jakarta on Saturday.

The BPBD’s quick reaction team is coordinating with village apparatuses to collect data about the impact of the earthquake.

The earthquake has affected 42 families in the district. However, no fatalities or injuries have been reported.

Muhari said the earthquake also affected residents of Ambon Island but it did not cause panic among them. They felt a moderate earthquake for one to two seconds.

The epicenter of the 4.9-magnitude earthquake was located 12 kilometers southeast of Kairatu, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
