This is a great opportunity for Indonesia to export this commoditySurabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) A. A. LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti urged the East Java provincial government to facilitate the export of banana commodities by preparing regulations and production infrastructure.
"The high production of bananas has the potential to continue to be increased. This is a great opportunity for Indonesia to export this commodity," Mattalitti remarked here on Saturday.
The speaker explained that East Java Province had become the largest area that produced bananas in Indonesia in 2020, with production totaling over 2.6 million tons. According to Mattalitti, the figure showed that some 32 percent of the national banana production came from East Java.
Mattalitti emphasized that for realizing the export market of bananas, the government should support it through regulations and simple procedures that can boost production, so as to make it easier for banana farmers and business players.
"An easy regulation is expected (to make) the export volume higher. It is directly proportional to the production results. That means there will be an increase in labor absorption, land expansion, and an increase in investment," he remarked.
During his working visit to East Java, he reminded that advancement of the horticulture subsector should be supported by proper and adequate human resources.
In addition, he stated that farmers and related offices need to increase production in terms of quantity, continuity, and quality for the sake of export needs.
"However, more importantly, (banana) production for exports should involve more smallholder farmers or farmer groups, so that the increase in export value has an impact on the increase in the farmers' incomes," he stated.
Meanwhile, the areas with the largest production of bananas in East Java are Malang, Pasuruan, Lamongan, Banyuwangi, Lumajang, and Ponorogo districts.
