The Protection of Domestic Workers Bill has been dormant for a long time, it's time to (bring it up) again
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) has called for the immediate ratification of the Protection of Domestic Workers Bill (RUU PPRT), which is still pending approval in parliament.

"The Protection of Domestic Workers Bill has been dormant for a long time, it's time to (bring it up) again. The Presidential Staff Office is ready to provide full support," KSP chief Moeldoko remarked during a meeting held to discuss the bill and its ratification, here on Thursday.

He said he expected the ratification of the Protection of Domestic Workers Bill to address the issue of a non-existent legal basis for domestic workers’ protection, and as a means to offer workers a sense of security, and safety from discrimination, exploitation, and harassment.

Moeldoko cited data from the National Network of Advocacy on Domestic Workers (Jala PRT), which stated that there were 1,743 cases of violence against domestic workers between 2018 and 2020.

The data underlines the urgent need to ratify the Domestic Workers Protection Bill.

The bill would offer a comprehensive and clear list of the rights and obligations of domestic workers, heads of families, and the institutions which manage domestic workers, he said.

Discussing and ratifying a law in an extensive manner is difficult, especially if the law is considered marginal and politically unprofitable, he added.

It would take hard work and strong collaboration from all ministries and agencies, as well as support from the general public, he said.

"This requires a task force that involves many stakeholders, including the general public. The management for (the bill's) formation (must be) immediately formulated. As for how (the task force) works, we can adopt the work style of the Sexual Violence Crime Bill Task Force team," he added.
