Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia boosted its market penetration of fishery products by participating in the 19th Seafood Show Osaka 2022 held on April 13-14, 2022, at ATC Hall Osaka, Japan.

"Japan is one of the countries with the largest consumption of fishery products in the world, with a total import value from all over the world reaching more than US$9.9 billion," Director General of National Export Development (PEN) of the Ministry of Trade, Didi Sumedi, noted here on Friday.

Sumedi remarked that Indonesia's participation in the exhibition was the right step to increase the volume of exports of Indonesian fishery products to Japan.

The 19th Seafood Show Osaka 2022 was the largest fishery product exhibition in western Japan (Kansai). The exhibition was attended by some 400 importers and retailers domiciled in Japan.

At this exhibition, Indonesia became the only participant from outside Japan.

The exhibition, also a follow-up to the implementation of Foodex Tokyo 2022, was a series of promotions of fishery products conducted by Indonesian trade representatives in Japan.

According to Sumedi, Indonesia is the 11th supplier of marine and fishery products to Japan, with a four-percent market share.

In 2021, the total value of Indonesia's fishery export transactions to Japan was recorded at US$433.8 million, or up by 3.19 percent as compared to 2020.

"Japan is the main destination country for the exports of Indonesia's fresh and cold yellowfin tuna. Since 2018, the contribution of exports to Japan has always been above 80 percent of Indonesia's total exports to the rest of the world," Sumedi explained.

Furthermore, he noted that the increase in Indonesia's market share of fresh and cold yellowfin tuna to Japan continued to be improved through product innovation.

"One of them is by introducing the kiriotoshi/cut-off yellowfin tuna presented at the Indonesia Pavilion," he added.
