Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) stated that the newly appointed acting regional heads would function as the central government's representatives in addressing issues plaguing their respective regions.

Deputy IV of Chief of the Presidential Staff Office, Juri Ardiantoro, stressed that the five new leaders' tasks were not merely to complete their terms of office until the next election but to implement the vision, mission, policies, and directives of the president.

A total of five acting regional heads were appointed by Home Affairs Minister, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, on Thursday. They would replace the governors of Banten, Gorontalo, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Sulawesi, and West Papua, whose terms of office ended in May 2022.

The five high-ranking officials appointed were Al Muktabar as acting governor of Banten, Ridwan Djamaluddin as acting governor of the Bangka Belitung Islands, Hamka Hendra Noer as acting governor of Gorontalo, Akmal Malik as acting governor of West Sulawesi, and General Commissioner (retired) Paulus Waterpauw as acting governor of West Papua.

They should be able to follow President Joko Widodo's directives that they must be able to lead in addressing various issues that had become the government's concern, such as issues related to health and the national economic recovery.

"This includes mitigating various risk of problems that arise in the (practice)," he added.

He highlighted the importance for the acting regional head to be able to ensure an orderly dynamics of their respective area's communities as a means to develop Indonesia as a whole and sovereign nation.

Ardiantoro viewed it as important since Indonesia was still facing threats of national disintegration owing to intolerance and radicalism.

They must also contribute to the success of the 2024 General Election and Regional Election and prevent the agenda from becoming like the earlier elections, in which the event had become a tool to incite chaos through provocation aimed at community, race, and beliefs (SARA).

He did not forget to congratulate the chosen officials.

The terms of office of at least 101 regional heads are ending in 2022, 49 of which will conclude this May. Those include Banten Governor Wahidin Halim, Gorontalo Governor Rusli Habibie, Bangka Belitung Islands Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan, West Sulawesi Governor Ali Baal Masdar Anwar, and West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan.
