Vaccine is a kind of drug and biological product that must secure halal certification in accordance with Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Products.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the North Sumatra Revolutionary Legal Aid Post (PBHRI), Achmad Sandry Nasution, has urged the government to comply with the Supreme Court's verdict on halal vaccines.

"The disobedience of the Supreme Court's verdict will ruin Indonesian administrative order," he said in a written statement released on Thursday.

The Supreme Court has issued verdict number 31P/HUM/2022 necessitating the government to issue halal certification for COVID-19 vaccines, he said.

The verdict was issued on April 14, 2022. However, it seemed that the government had no political will to comply with the verdict until Thursday (May 12).

"This is the concrete form of legal violation and will have a legal consequence since Indonesia is a constitutional state," he said.

During the Eid al-Fitr holiday exodus period, vaccines that did not conform to the Supreme Court's verdict were used for vaccinations, which constituted a legal violation, he explained.

The consequence of the Supreme Court’s verdict is that the government must provide halal vaccines for Muslims, he said.

"That is the state obligation endorsed by the Supreme Court and the verdict cannot be challenged anymore," he stressed.

However, after the issuance of the Supreme Court's verdict, "non-halal" vaccines were still used for vaccinating Muslims, he pointed out.

The halal vaccine is a manifestation of the government's obligation to protect Muslims' legal rights regarding non-consumption of haram (forbidden by Islamic law) goods, he said.

"Vaccine is a kind of drug and biological product that must secure halal certification in accordance with Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Products," he added.
