Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry will expedite measures to achieve Indonesia's target for the forestry and other land use (FoLU) sector to be a net carbon sink by 2030, according to a ministry's official.

Speaking after the signing of a memorandum of understanding on achieving the FoLU Net Sink by 2030 with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the ministry's Secretary General, Bambang Hendroyono, noted that the agreement will expedite the process to achieve the carbon net sink target, as Indonesia has conceived the operational plan.

"It is clear we have agreed to conduct an exchange in the science and technology aspect to bolster cooperation in our current works and to expedite efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation that we are currently trying to reduce," Hendroyono stated at the ministry's office here on Friday.

He affirmed that the ministry will continue with measures to achieve sustainable forest management through cooperation with USAID, and support from relevant stakeholders will be crucial to expedite efforts to rehabilitate forests and lands and achieve the carbon net sink target on time.

"We will rev up efforts to restore peatlands and rehabilitate the mangrove environment, and the most important aspect will be to enhance efforts to maintain the conservation of our natural diversity," the ministry secretary general remarked.

To follow up on the agreement with USAID, the ministry will detail the work plan through scientific exchange and development, joint projects, and the involvement of stakeholders in various activities and researches, he noted.

The ministry will also constantly monitor and evaluate all activities organized under the agreement to achieve the net sink target, he added.

"The memorandum of understanding is a step forward, as the agreement between the ministry and the USAID that we are currently overseeing is consistent with the ministry's policies and programs in connection with climate change mitigation," Hendroyono stated.
