Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) held in Bali on May 25-28, 2022, offers a momentum to strengthen responses to disasters, Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi stated.

The meeting is attended not only by government representatives but also by academics, practitioners, and activists of civil society organizations.

"This is the most appropriate platform for collaboration and cooperation both at the international and regional levels in handling disasters. We also see here and there a lot of local wisdom that helps efforts to handle disaster," the minister stated while observing preparations for the event at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) here on Tuesday.

Marsudi remarked that the event will bring together over six thousand participants, of which 70 percent will attend it in person. Nearly 24 percent of the six thousand participants are representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), 20 percent are government representatives, 11 percent are academics, and seven percent are businesspeople. The GPDRR participants come from 183 countries," she stated.

"Once again, this is a very crucial UN meeting in the field of risk reduction. This is the largest gathering in terms of participants. As I mentioned earlier, nearly 70 percent of the six thousand participants will come in person, and once again, this will encourage countries to continue to cooperate and collaborate in handling disasters and change disaster risks into resistance to disasters," Marsudi remarked.

GP/GPDRR is an international and cross-institutional forum that discusses global efforts to mitigate disaster risks. During the meeting, delegates will evaluate the application of the Sendai Framework that serves as a reference for countries to draft disaster response policies and programs.
