In May 2022, inflation was 0.4 percent, or there was an increase in CPI, from 109.98 in April to 110.42
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded inflation of 0.4 percent in May 2022, as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased, from 109.98 in April to 110.42.

"In May 2022, inflation was 0.4 percent, or there was an increase in CPI, from 109.98 in April to 110.42," Head of BPS Margo Yuwono stated at a press conference here on Thursday.

Yuwono explained that inflation in May was triggered by air freight rates, prices of broiler eggs, fresh fish, and shallots.

Thus, inflation for the calendar year May 2022 to December 2021 had reached 2.56 percent. Meanwhile, as compared to May 2021, inflation in May 2022 was recorded at 3.55 percent.

Yuwono said that on a comparison basis with the previous year, an inflation of 3.55 percent was the highest to have been recorded since the inflation of 3.61 in December 2017, also as compared to the previous year.

He noted that out of the 90 cities whose CPI was recorded, 87 cities experienced an inflation in May 2022, while two cities recorded deflation.

Out of the 87 cities experiencing inflation, the highest occurred in Tanjung Pandan, at 2.24 percent, and the lowest in Tangerang and Gunungsitoli, each of which recorded an inflation of 0.05 percent.

Inflation of 2.24 percent in Tanjung Pandan was chiefly due to kerisi fish that contributed 0.53 percent to inflation, 0.31 percent from bottled water, and 0.28 percent from air transportation.

Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Kotamobagu, which was minus 21 percent and the lowest was recorded in Merauke, at minus 0.02 percent.

Yuwono said that the volatile prices of chicken, red onion, and beef commodities contributed the most to the inflation of 0.16 percent.

The second contributor was the core component that contributed 0.15 percent to inflation, with the dominant commodities driving inflation in the core component being fresh fish, rice with side dishes, and sweet bread.

The third is the price component regulated by the government, which contributes to an inflation of 0.09 percent due to an increase in the air transportation fares.

The government-regulated price component experienced an increasing trend, as the government had allowed airlines to adjust the production costs for domestic passenger transportation.

Moreover, a policy to increase the price of Pertamax fuel causes an increase in the price component regulated by the government.
