We do not underestimate FMD cases
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo has ensured that the beef supply is safe to meet the community's needs ahead of the Muslim day of the sacrifice festival, Eid al-Adha, with a supply of 42,268 tons.

Limpo, in a written statement here on Monday, noted that the available beef supply ahead of the Muslim holiday is sufficient for domestic consumption.

He ensured that the Ministry of Agriculture, along with the regional governments, had continued to make efforts to handle and control the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak that affected livestock in several regions in the country.

As part of the efforts to ensure that beef supply is free from FMD, he emphasized that the mobility of livestock had been restricted to prevent the spread of the disease.

He affirmed that the community should not harbor concerns since the supply of beef obtained from regions, with no FMD cases, was sufficient.

"We will continue to supervise and improve the cattle distribution (process), so that the supply and demand of livestock can run smoothly," he stated.

The minister emphasized the need for all parties to collaborate in the efforts to prevent the spread of FMD, especially in regions, despite improvement in the recovery rate and continued increase in the handling efforts.

"We do not underestimate FMD cases. In handling this, we need all parties' cooperation," he stressed.

The ministry, along with the regional governments and police, continue focusing on working in accordance with the guidelines in controlling FMD that have been prepared. The crisis center post continues to be actively monitored, veterinary medical personnel are working to deal with the outbreak optimally, and training of extension workers and others is also being conducted.

"Currently, FMD exists and does not harm humans. We have also asked for the MUI (Indonesian Ulema Council) fatwa, and it has been issued. This is proof that the state is present to control (the outbreak), so that everything can run well," he remarked.
