The government is conducting this implementation to showcase readiness in the automotive industry sector to produce products that can contribute to emission reductions and are more environmentally friendly
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Industry Ministry supports the development of Euro 4 vehicles as a concrete step to deal with environmental issues and climate change.

Indonesia has targeted to independently reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 29 percent by 2030 or by 41 percent with international support.

"The government is conducting this implementation to showcase readiness in the automotive industry sector to produce products that can contribute to emission reductions and are more environmentally friendly," Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries of the ministry Taufiek Bawazier noted in his statement here on Tuesday.

Bawazier made the remark while representing Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita at the launch of Mercedes-Benz Axor Euro 4 at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten.

He noted that the higher the Euro standard that is set, the lower the gas content limit of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile hydrocarbons, and other particles that can have a negative impact on humans and the environment.

"To support this goal, for example, in terms of the fuel supply, the government has implemented standards and quality (specifications) for diesel fuel type 51, with a sulfur content of 50 ppm (equivalent to Euro 4) under the trade name Pertamina Dex," he explained.

The ministry is optimistic that the transition from Euro 2 to Euro 4 would encourage national economic growth and proffer myriad benefits in the form of reducing emissions and air pollution, increasing vehicular performance for the better by improving the engine and fuel quality, as well as boosting export opportunities for the national automotive industry.

The automotive industry is the main contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the transportation equipment industry. In the first quarter of 2022, the transportation equipment industry clocked the highest growth of 14.2 percent as compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

The potential of the Indonesian automotive industry is currently supported by 21 industrial companies of four or more wheeled motorized vehicles, with a production capacity of 2.35 million units per year, and contributing to foreign exchange through investments that reach Rp71.35 trillion.

"In addition, the chain impact of the automotive industry activities has also absorbed 38 thousand direct workers and more than 1.5 million people, who work along the industrial value chain," Bawazier stated.

The Industry Ministry lauded PT Daimler Commercial Vehicles Indonesia for launching the Mercedes-Benz Axor Euro 4 and being the first product from a European brand to introduce a truck, with Euro 4 standards.

"We hope PT Daimler Commercial Vehicle Indonesia will continue to be a pioneer in developing vehicles, with higher standards according to global specifications. This will support the government's efforts to create added value in the country as well as spur national economic growth," he stated.

General Manager of Daimler Commercial Vehicles Indonesia Naeem Hassim revealed that the launch of the Mercedes-Benz Axor Euro 4 is a form of the company's support for the Indonesian government.

Mercedes-Benz Axor Euro 4 is designed with the OM 906 LA engine equipped with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and ZPD Pump that will provide high operating time, with longer maintenance intervals of up to 50 thousand km and fuel efficiency.

Apart from reducing exhaust emissions, this technology also offers advantages, such as having better engine response to the gas pedal, longer engine life due to reduced risk of carbon deposits in the engine, and minimizing the risk of poor-quality fuel.
