Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Family Day on June 29 serves as a reminder that parents must set a good example for their children so that they inculcate positive traits, the National Commission for Child Protection has said.

"In the midst of the digitalization era like today, the idea of parents as good example must be promoted, it should not to be eroded with time. The National Family Day can be the right moment to reinforce the good example from parents," chairman of the commission, Arist Merdeka Sirait, said on Friday.

When parents lead by example, it is more effective, because children tend to imitate the behavior displayed by their parents, as opposed to advice, he added.

The family is the first platform for children to learn, starting from the day they are born until they grow into adults, he said.

"In the process of child development from birth to growth and development into adulthood, the example learned from the closest environment, such as the family and school environment, will (contribute to) the formation of the child's (traits)," he added.

The National Family Day event could serve as a reminder of one of the family's functions, which is protection, Sirait said.

"There are eight family functions, those being religious, sociocultural, love, protection, reproduction, socialization, education, economy, and environment development," he added.

The family functions—which have been listed in Government Regulation Number 87 of 2014 about Population Development and Family Development, Family Planning, and Family Information Systems—must serve as guidelines for every family in the country, he said.

"In this regard, the National Commission for Child Protection, as an independent child protection institution which has been given the task and function of providing protection to children, compels all families in Indonesia to make family a frontline in protecting children, and offer child protection in accordance with what is contained in one of the functions of the family, that is the protection function," he said.

The 2022 National Family Day serves as a collective reminder of the importance of families' role in protecting children from various negative influences.

"As is known, currently, there are some reports regarding cases of violations of children's rights, violence cases, neglect, and so on. National Family Day can serve as a common reminder of the importance of the family's role in protecting children, as well as a reminder of the importance of improving affection among family members," Sirait said.
