Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Arsul Sani has sought the formation of a coalition of the University of Indonesia (UI) alumni in the parliament who can assist in government and state policy formulation.

"Hopefully, a coalition of UI alumni can be formed in the parliament later. In other sectors, they will improve it more," he said in a written statement here on Monday.

Sani further said he expects the University of Indonesia Alumni Association (ILUNI UI) to contribute through a decisive role. He lauded ILUNI UI’s participation, including the ILUNI Faculty of Law’s (FHUI’s) contribution to the legislative processes at Commission III of the House of Representatives, which gave inputs for the Draft Criminal Code improvement and provided inputs through seminars and focus group discussions for the completion of the Personal Data Protection Bill (PDP).

“Hopefully, other fellows can also provide inputs in their respective commissions in the House of Representatives. I think it will help us who work in Senayan to be better at producing legislative products,” he added.

Meanwhile, General Chairperson of ILUNI UI Andre Rahadian said that the current atmosphere of polarization has been made worse by the pandemic and the digital revolution.

"We see fake news, mutual accusations between those with different opinions in cyberspace, hate speech, labeling, framing, doxing behavior, and many other behaviors that (compromise) national unity," he noted.

This has pushed ILUNI UI to be active in the community, including through the National Cohesion movement. The movement kicked off on October 28, 2021, the same day as Youth Pledge Day.

Since then, several discussions and audiences with UI alumni have been conducted to seek solutions to the issue of national polarization.

“We try to act as a bridge and connector that connects cross-elements, in accordance with the spirit of the meeting point, synergies, and the results of the ILUNI UI meeting. We are trying to establish this synergy by holding various (meetings)," he said.

In the future, the National Cohesion movement will be promoted through the ILUNI UI Salemba Discussion Forum Institution led by ILUNI UI to monitor national issues and maintain national values.

According to House of Representatives member Eddy Soeparno, the University of Indonesia and its alumni played a vital role in determining the course of history in 1908, 1928, 1945, 1966, and 1998.

Soeparno said he is confident that Indonesia is currently recovering from the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

“As Confucius said, the greatest glory is not never falling but rising every time we fall. We already know what the recovery means. I am sure that all of us, as University of Indonesia alumni, are passionate about the (recovery),” he added.

He pointed out that currently, the national democracy is considered to have deviated slightly from what was aspired to at the beginning. At present, polarization is dividing the people, as evident from the rampant mud-slinging on social media. This is not in accordance with the second principle of Pancasila, which promotes civilized humanity.

Thus, he urged the UI to maintain togetherness and diversity in the life of the nation.

“I expect that UI will be the one at the forefront to care for our diversity. To care for our togetherness, tolerance among all of us. And UI is at the forefront of (uplifting) our spirit of (recovery) toward the future," he added.
