Samarinda (ANTARA) - The East Kalimantan Provincial Government and Australia's University of Adelaide have renewed their cooperation in health education to enhance the capacity of human resources of the province.

The renewal of the cooperation was done by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by East Kalimantan Regional Secretary Sri Wahyuni and Acting Executive Dean of Adelaide University's Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology David Lewis.

"This is not the first cooperation. Our cooperation has been active for 15 years. Hence, this MoU serves as an instrument for renewing the existing cooperation," Wahyuni remarked in Samarinda on Sunday.

She explained that the cooperation; whose scope encompasses education, health, and research; had allowed the provincial government to send around 20 medical workers to obtain training at the Australian University last year.

The training courses offered by the university focus on preventive medical measures rather than curative ones, she added.

The secretary expressed hope that the cooperation would help East Kalimantan produce medical service workers capable of not only providing people with health services but also health education.

"That way, we can break free from reliance on curative measures," she said.

Under the cooperation, she added, medical workers from East Kalimantan can also conduct research with support provided by the Australian Government and University of Adelaide.

"The University of Adelaide offers us supervision and assistance in conducting research related to education and health in East Kalimantan," she stated.

Wahyuni further remarked that the East Kalimantan Provincial Government would evaluate the cooperation that has long been maintained with the university.

"(We will identify) the impacts of the implementation of the cooperation on the health and education sectors," she said.
