Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has provided a stimulant program to prepare digital talents in cooperation with renowned universities in Indonesia and technology companies, both domestic and international, Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate stated.

"This (cooperation) is forged to produce (talents with) intermediate digital skills through curriculum, including coding, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and metaverse," he noted through a statement on Tuesday.

Last year, 12.5 million people participated in the stimulant program that the government had prepared through the ministry.

At the very least, the program inspired micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enter the digital ecosystem and have basic digital skills in four curriculum areas, he highlighted.

These four curriculum areas are digital skills, digital safety, digital culture, and digital ethics.

Plate called to make continued efforts to develop digital talents, so that digital infrastructure can be utilized successfully and optimally for all Indonesians.

However, he noted that the ministry's efforts alone were insufficient, as Indonesia requires at least 600 thousand digital talents each year.

"There are nine million for the next 15 years, and the ministry can only prepare 150 thousand to 200 thousand, maybe even less than that," he elaborated.

To this end, the minister encouraged strategic parties to play an active role and participate.

"I invite Mastel and the Republic of Indonesia's Informatics Telecommunication Ecosystem Family to cooperate to produce (talents with) intermediate digital skills," he remarked.

In addition to digital talents at the intermediate level, Indonesia needs digital policy makers to be able to execute the smart city, smart island, and even smart village programs, Plate noted.

"Without digital policy makers, it would certainly be difficult," he stated.

"Through our Digital Leadership Academy Program, we prepared up to 500 seats in cooperation with the University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Oxford University, Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge University, London School of Economic, and others," he stated.

The minister expects this to be expanded, if possible, to ensure that Indonesia has digital policy makers in the government and startup companies.
