Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government targets 80 percent of Indonesian people in the productive age group to have partaken in vocational education and training by 2024 to optimize the country’s demographic bonus.

"Vocational education and training are very important to create superior and competitive human resources, considering that Indonesia will have a demographic bonus that has to be utilized well," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy stated at an event titled "National Showcase of Vocational High School (SMK) Capable 2022" monitored virtually here on Friday.

Effendy noted that President Joko Widodo had paid special attention to revitalize the role of SMK. However, currently, the government has made further attempts in the form of revitalization of vocational education and training.

"It is stated in the Presidential Regulation Number 68 of 2022 regarding the Revitalization of Vocational Education and Vocational Training," the coordinating minister noted.

Thus, currently, his side continues to coordinate to implement the presidential regulation. To this end, the government required the support of all stakeholders, including the business sectors.

"It is the sector that the students will face (after they graduate) – bringing them into the realm of work," he noted.

Effendy also encouraged vocational schools to learn more about the regulation.

"We also strive on developing a number of ideas on how to implement the presidential regulation,” he added.

Article 1 of the Presidential Regulation Number 68 of 2022 stipulates that vocational education is secondary education that prepares its students to work or establish entrepreneurship in certain fields as well as higher education that readies its students to work or build entrepreneurship with certain applied skills.

Meanwhile, vocational training is an activity to provide, obtain, improve, as well as develop working competence, productivity, discipline, attitude, and ethic on a certain skill and expertise level in accordance with the job qualification.
