We expect that these eight functions of a family can be a guideline for families in Indonesia to create a familial environment that can support a child's development.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Family Day (Harganas), commemorated every June 29, is the right moment to strengthen the eight functions of a family, according to the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture.
"This is the right moment to bolster the implementation of the family's eight functions to support children's development," ministry official Femmy Eka Kartika Putri noted during a virtual interview with ANTARA on Monday.
A child's development, right from birth until adolescence, should be supported by a good environment, she said.
"Growing up in a good environment will form a positive character in children," she explained.
Thus, education from parents is very important to form a child's character, especially when they are teenagers.
"This is why the family's eight functions should be optimized. These family functions are not outdated. In fact, these family functions are always relevant with the passing of time," she said.
The family's eight functions include the religious function under which parents serve as role models when it comes to praying, Putri explained.
The second is the sociocultural function, wherein parents demonstrate good behavior.

The third is the affection function wherein parents are required to provide affection, and the fourth function is protection, wherein they are required to provide a sense of safety and comfort.
Meanwhile, the rest of the functions comprise the reproductive function, social and education function, economical function, and environmental guidance function.
"These eight family functions should be well-implemented within families in Indonesia," Putri said.
The ministry is continuing to encourage dissemination and education on the importance of implementing these eight functions, she noted.
"We expect that these eight functions of a family can be a guideline for families in Indonesia to create a familial environment that can support a child's development," she remarked.
