Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of Presidential Staff Office, Moeldoko, commemorated Agriculture Day with hundreds of young and millennial farmers in Banyuwangi district, East Java, on Tuesday.

Agriculture Day, which is celebrated every June 21 in Indonesia, is celebrated by all agricultural communities, including farmers, ranchers, fishermen, employees, and entrepreneurs from the agricultural sector.

Moeldoko emphasized that it is now the right moment for youths and millennial farmers to introduce innovations in the agricultural sector. He said that the adoption of technology as a means to modernize the agricultural sector must be expedited in order to increase production.

"We are now facing a food crisis so the increase in production of the agricultural sector for food commodities must be improved. This is where you, young and millennial farmers, must contribute," he said, according to a press release received here on Tuesday.

"By adopting technology, the stigma of agricultural affairs, which is identical to being coated in mud, can dissipate so that the interest of young people to become farmers can increase," he explained.

Moeldoko, who was also chairman of the National Farmers' Association, said that the agriculture sector has great potential for creating jobs. However, this must be balanced with extensive innovation to make agricultural work promising.

"Who doesn't want to be a farmer, if (being a) farmer (makes you) rich. Are you ready to be a rich farmer?" asked Moeldoko.

Young and millennial farmers in Banyuwangi are being offered a program called Agriculture Champion (Jagoan Tani), facilitated by the regional government, which is the result of the transformation of the youth agricultural business competition and has been routinely conducted since 2018.

According to the deputy head of Banyuwangi, Sugiran, the Agriculture Champion Program has been designed to present the agricultural sector in a more attractive way, with a touch of innovation and digitalization. It is expected to entice young people into participating in agriculture, whether in the plantation, fisheries, or animal husbandry sectors.
