Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto, expressed keenness to continue cooperation in the development and technology transfer for the main weapon system equipment (alutsista) with Japan during a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Nobuo Kishi.

During their meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Tuesday, June 21, Subianto conveyed that his ministry was optimistic regarding the cooperation with Japan to produce qualified alutsista for both countries in future.

"We were optimistic that the technology transfer cooperation would go according to plan, and we would produce qualified defense equipment products in the future," Subianto said as quoted from a press release received here Wednesday.

Indonesia and Japan had earlier signed an agreement on the transfer of defense equipment and technology in March 2021 during a meeting called "2+2" between Minister Subianto and Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi with Minister Kishi and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in Tokyo, Japan.

Furthermore, Subianto affirmed that in an effort to modernize defense equipment and master the latest military technology, the Ministry of Defense had changed its policy from defense spending to defense investment.

To realize this policy, Subianto remarked that Indonesia has collaborated with several countries.

The minister also expressed his gratitude for Minister Kishi's active role in supporting the relations between both nations in the defense sector, maintaining the relations to run well in future.

In fact, he is upbeat that the sound relations between Indonesia and Japan in the defense sector would continue to improve through new steps.

In response to Subianto's comments, Kishi invited Subianto to visit Tokyo to further discuss efforts to improving and strengthen defense cooperation between Indonesia and Japan.

The meeting between the two ministers took place at the 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting (ADMM) on June 21-22 2022, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
