Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government is willing to increase and expand its defense cooperation with Japan in the future, a defense ministry spokesman said.

Increase and expansion of cooperation between the two countries was among the agenda items discussed in a meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and his Japanese counterpart toshimi Kitazawa in Tokyo, the spokesman, Brig. Gen. I Wayan Midho, said.

Widho has just accompanied the defense minister to visit Japan two two days.

He said that so far defense cooperation between Japan and Indonesia so far was still limited to exchanging military officials. "The number of exchanged military officials was small, namely one to three persons," he said.

Ahead, he said, this number would be increased so that there would be many Indonesian military officers pursuing studies in Japan, particularly at the Japanese Yokoshuka Military Academy.

He said that Indonesia wanted to expand its cooperation with Japan in other form such as joint military exercises or operations.

Both countries agreed to expand defense cooperation based on a mutual respect basis and mutual benefit, he said. (*)
