Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives (ACC) explored cooperation in the eradication of corruption, both in terms of prevention and taking action.

During a virtual courtesy call with ACC, KPK Deputy Chairwoman Lili Pintauli Siregar noted here on Wednesday that the exploration of cooperation is crucial, as it is related to increasing the capacity of the institution and human resources, exchanging information on good practices, supporting the exchange of experts, and in other fields.

"For the benefit of law enforcement, we can also collaborate in data and information exchange, search for people, search and return of assets, extradition, joint investigation, and others," Siregar stated.

According to the deputy chairwoman, corruption is a cross-jurisdictional crime that pushes for international cooperation among anti-corruption agencies in the world.

Moreover, Siregar believes that the perpetrators of corruption are shrewd people with power. She referred to corruption as being an extraordinary crime that necessitated extraordinary handling.

"It is hoped that cooperation between the KPK and the Maldives' ACC would increase and strengthen international commitments in the eradication of corruption," she affirmed.

Meanwhile, ACC Maldives President Adam Shamil lauded the meeting with the KPK. He remarked that the Maldivian ACC will arrange a technical-level committee to ease the exchange of information.

"Together, we will agree on an MoU and outline cooperation technically, with the main point (being to) fight corruption. The detail is about technical expertise and also how we can learn from each other, such as from the experience of handling cases in the past, the successes or performance achievements of each institution," Shamil elaborated.

Furthermore, the KPK highlighted that cooperation was being explored in alignment with the Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) of Indonesia's G20 Presidency, wherein the KPK, as the chair, proposed four priority issues: the role of audits in combating corruption; public participation and anti-corruption education; surveillance on regulations and good practices regarding the monitoring of legal professionals' role in money laundering; and the eradication of corruption in the renewable energy sector.
