Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The construction of the National Data Center in Nongsa sub-district, Batam city, Riau Islands, will start at the end of 2022 and be completed within 18 months, the Communication and Informatics Ministry has informed.

"Based on the instructions of Mr. President, this construction will take place at the end of 2022 and will be completed within the next 18 months," Minister Johnny G. Plate said during an interview in Batam on Friday.

The National Data Center has been envisaged as a digital and interconnected data storage warehouse, he said adding, an entity from a government institution or ministry will be tasked with organizing the private electronic system sector.

"For the government, there will be ministries and institutions as data trustees and (as for) the private sector, the data trustees will be the organizers of the private electronic system sector," the minister informed.

The government will be assisted in the decision-making process with the development of a national cloud-based data center with Tier-IV standards.

Currently, the central and regional governments use more than 2,700 data centers, but only 3 percent use cloud computing technology, resulting in data quality issues that make them below global standards.

The data center will require two things—a fiber optic transmission network and the availability of reliable electricity.

"The data center (will rely on) the availability of two things at minimum, the first being the availability of a fiber optic transmission network, and the second being the availability of electricity supply because the data is measured by the amount of electricity consumption," Plate said.

The data center project, which is valued at US$100 million, is part of a collaboration between the Indonesian and South Korean governments. It will be funded by the South Korean government after the details are threshed out by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) and the Finance Ministry.
