"This simple action will have a big impact on the sustainability of earth," Baswedan stated here on Friday.
To this end, the governor invited residents to turn off the lights on Saturday (July 2) from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time to commemorate World Environment Day.
According to Baswedan, turning off the lights can help save energy and the economy while reducing carbon emissions.
"Insya Allah (God willing), (Jakarta) remains livable for our children, grandchildren, and the next generation. We can show them that we use this city well and that it can be resilient and sustainable," Baswedan affirmed.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Environment Office noted that based on the calculations of state-owned electricity company PT PLN in March 2022, a one-hour light outage could save electricity consumption of 171.55 megawatts (MW).
In addition, it saved the economy Rp247.8 million and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 160.23 tons of CO2.
Meanwhile, in terms of light outages thrice in 2021, PT PLN recorded to have saved electricity consumption by 539.21 MW, saved the economy Rp707.3 million, and lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 371.2 tons of CO2.
Furthermore, buildings or facilities where lights are planned to be put off are the Jakarta Provincial Government office building, protocol roads and arterial roads in five areas of Jakarta, the City Hall building, National Monument (Monas), and the Youth Monument.
In addition, lights would be turned off at the HI Roundabout, the Arjuna Wijaya Statue, the Heroes Monument, and the statue of General Sudirman.
Privately-owned and commercial buildings, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and apartments are also expected to participate in the 60-minute blackout, except for hospitals, clinics, and health centers.
